Our history

Friends of Tate South Lambeth Library was formed in 1999 when local residents in Stockwell and Oval got together to fight the plan by Lambeth Council to close down South Lambeth Library. After a year of campaigning, supported by many other local groups and individuals, the decision was reversed in March 2000.

But Friends of Tate South Lambeth Library was not looking to keep things as they stood. South Lambeth Library had suffered years of neglect, when it was left out of the mainstream of resources and development. So we have continued to campaign to improve the physical state of the library and enhance its services and facilities.

A great deal has been achieved, and a much-loved local library has been transformed. The libraries service has put in investment – longer opening times, new groups for special interests, and a major renovation of both the exterior and the interior. Nine computers were installed through the government’s People’s Network programme.

Friends of Tate South Lambeth Library has also played a major role. It has:

  • contributed to the library’s renovation and refurbishment by securing funds and participation by local students
  • installed  a new art space
  • enhanced the library’s links to the local community – organising events, securing donations of Portuguese books, and acting as channel for communication and consultation with the library’s management and staff.
